Come Back Soon!
"Jesus come back, soon."
This has been my prayer lately. I mean for the past couple of days. I've literally been praying for the return of Jesus. I had never really thought about praying for the return of Jesus until I read a blog post by John Eldredge, author of Wild at Heart. In the blog post John writes how he and his wife were eating a dinner with another couple. The man mentioned how he was praying daily for the return of Jesus. And John stopped and asked him if that was common for he and his friends. And the friend's wife said that it wasn't common. Their church never really spoke about it.
John then talks about how people usually respond when it comes to talking about the return of Jesus. He mentions how it's often like talking about UFO's. It's awkward, uncomfortable and it often brings about a sense of foreboding. Like, talking about dying, we often respond like it's something to be afraid of.
(Pause.) Don't we? In response to that I've often said, "Not yet!" "Not 'til I get married." "Not 'til I have kids." "Not 'til I turn 11 (long story)." And in those rare moments I actually wanted Jesus to come back it was because of something like, "Come Jesus so everyone will know that I'm not crazy for believing you." Or even more selfish, "Come Jesus because I don't want to toil anymore." Does fear, unease, or foreboding rise up in you? Have you ever stopped to wonder why?
Why?
Can I just stop to say, God is so good!!! I'm so excited just thinking about Jesus' return right at this very moment. He IS coming back!
Okay so, Why do we fear the return of Jesus or better yet, Why aren't we praying for it? Perhaps because we are still trying to make life on Earth 'work' or maybe deep, deep down inside we don't believe it will ever happen. Perhaps we don't really understand the reason why we should want Jesus to come back.
This is what we are made for! We are made to live in deep and close intimacy with God. So deep. So pure. We are made to live in a world where there is no death, no disease, no heartbreak, no end to the goodness. To walk side by side with God. To rule and reign with him. To have the deep hunger and thirst quenched.
You know that deep thirst and hunger. You've taken it to earthly lovers, your career, your hobby and none of them have been able to fill and if they have, not for very long. It never lasts. It turns sour. The relationship that was so filling no longer meets our needs. The career that we thought would save us makes us feel trapped. The hobby that we loved no longer brings any joy.
We aren't made for this world. We aren't made for death and decay. We aren't meant for that ache that never goes away.
I so want Jesus to come back. I LONG for that! I want to be with him forever. He is the lover to top all lovers. He is the hope of glory. I long to be made whole and complete.
No more! Our deepest hunger and thirst will be filled and quenched. It will never end. Wholeness. No more loneliness. Jesus! He IS coming! He hasn't forgotten us. We are saved. We are redeemed. God Loves us. God loves me. God loves you! God hasn't forgotten you. I will pray for the return of Christ. Will you do the same?
